Good Things To Know About Distance Learning

There are a few things that adult students and their instructors must deal with and eventually overcome before any learning can take place. The truth of the matter is that one cannot directly shift from surface learning to a more deeper educational process. All of the above-mentioned challenges are said to somehow relate to distance education.

This can only be a true statement, as in order to attend any form of distance learning, a person must absolutely have a very high motivation. This is mainly because the daily contact with teachers and other students is usually missing. The instructors can help motivate distant students by providing consistent and timely feedback. They may also promote discussions among the students and, at the same time, encourage, and reinforce effective student study habits.

Another important thing distance education requires is the ability to relate to the others. The main reason for this is the fact that many students tend to learn most effectively when they are given the opportunity to interact with other students. As a positive result, the interaction among students typically leads to group problem solving. When students are unable to meet together, they can use appropriate interactive technology such as E-mail, in order to encourage small group and individual communication. Assignments in which students work together and then report back or present to the class as a whole, encourage the interactions.

You will all agree that all the students need to recognize their strengths and limitations. They also need to understand their learning goals and objectives. The instructor can help the students attending the distance education courses to explore their limitations and their learning objectives. In order to make learning more meaningful and, at the same time, increase motivation, the instructors can provide opportunities for students to share their personal learning goals and objectives for a specific course.

It is a commonly known fact that the distance education students can sometimes be afraid of their ability to do well in a course. The truth is that they are dealing with many responsibilities, including employment and raising children. Their people they work with will most likely have no clue about their involvement in distance and the worst thing about is that their family members may even ignore them.

Should the learners save time for their educational activities and should they receive family support in their learning process, the student performance can only increase!

Menghubungkan Dua Buah Komputer : Kebetulan saya mempunyai satu unit PC di rumah dan satu buah laptop yang hampir selalu saya bawa ke tempat kerja. Sudah lama saya ingin mengoneksikan kedua perangkat tersebut dengan tujuan mempermudah transfer data dari PC ke laptop maupun sebaliknya. Kemarin, saya berhasil mengkoneksikan keduanya sehingga ketika saya harus mengcopy dari dan ke gadget-gadget tersebut, tidak perlu lagi mencabut dan menancapkan flash disk dari PC ke laptop maupun sebaliknya. Teman-teman yang kebetulan mempunyai dua buah komputer dan ingin menghubungkannya, silahkan ikuti tipsnya berikut ini bersama Tips dan Trik Komputer.

Pada kesempatan ini, Tips dan Trik Komputer ingin men-sharepengalaman dalam menghubungkan dua buah komputer dengan tipe jaringan peer to peer (point to point) dengan menggunakan kabel UTP (Unshielded Twisted Pair) tipe crossed. Jika tertarik, silakan ikuti langkah-langkahnya berikut ini.

PERALATAN / PERIPHERAL YANG DIBUTUHKAN

Pertama, (tentunya) dua buah komputer atau notebook dengannetwork card (kartu jaringan) yang biasanya telah “build in” di dalamnya. Pada saat ini, semua komputer atau notebook telah mengikutkan (menanamkan) kartu jaringan ini sebagai perangkat standart (onboard) jadi tidak perlu membeli perangkat kartu jaringan ini.

Kedua, kabel UTP kategori 5 (crossed) dengan panjang sesuai kebutuhan. Harga per meternya berkisar antara tiga ribu hingga empat ribu lima ratus rupiah.

Ketiga, dua buah konektor RJ45, dengan kisaran harga (saat ini) adalah seribu rupiah.

Keempat, tang kerimping yang khusus digunakan untuk memasang kabel UTP pada konektor RJ45.

Berikut cara memasang konektor RJ45 pada kedua ujung kabel UTP tersebut.

Ratakan kedua ujung kabel UTP tersebut dengan menggunakan tang kerimping. Cara pemasangan kabel pada konektor RJ45 adalah dengan skema crossed sebagai berikut.

Jika tidak ingin repot, kita dapat memesan kabel UTP RJ45 (crossed)yang sudah dipasangkan konektor RJ45 pada kedua ujung kabel tersebut di toko-toko komputer terdekat. Kita katakan saja kepada pemilik toko bahwa kita membutuhkan kabel UTP (kabel jaringancrossed) yang akan kita gunakan untuk menghubungkan dua komputer (laptop) tanpa menggunakan perangkat tambahan berupa hub.

Ini berbeda jika kita menggunakan hub maka kita harus menggunakan kabel UTP jenis straight-through. Namun hal ini akan menambah biaya untuk membeli hub tersebut yang harganya berkisar 200 ribuan. Jika memang hanya dua buah komputer yang ingin dihubungkan, kita tidak perlu menggunakan hub karena tanpa perangkat tersebut pun koneksi kedua komputer dapat dilakukan.dan hal ini akan “sedikit” menghemat biaya, kan.

LANGKAH-LANGKAH MENGHUBUNGKAN DUA BUAH KOMPUTER

LANGKAH PERTAMA, tancapkan konektor RJ45 yang ada pada kedua ujung kabel UTP pada slot network card (kartu jaringan) pada masing-masing PC atau notebook. Pastikan lampu indikator (biasanya berwarna hijau) pada kartu jaringan pada kedua komputer menyala. Jika tidak/belum menyala, coba cabut konektornya kemudian tancapkan lagi, siapa tahu cara menancapkannya kurang “pas”, sampai terdengar suara “kleq”. Atau jika masih tidak menyala, kemungkinan kartu jaringannya yang bermasalah.

LANGKAH KEDUA, menentukan & mengatur alamat IP masing-masing komputer. Kedua computer harus mempunyai alamat IP masing-masing yang berbeda satu dengan lainnya.

Cara Melakukan Pengaturan alamat IP adalah sebagai berikut.

1. Klik Start >> Control Panel >> Network Connections hingga tampil jendela Network Connections, seperti di bawah ini.

2. klik kanan icon jaringan yang berada di bawah baris LAN or High-Speed Internet kemudian pilih properties (lihat gambar di atas) sehingga muncul jendela Local Area Connection Properties, seperti gambar di bawah ini.

3. Sorot pada Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) kemudian klik propertieshingga muncul jendela Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) Properties seperti di bawah ini.

4. Klik (centangi) pada “Use the following IP address”.

Kemudian pada baris IP address, isikan alamat IP komputer yang kita inginkan, dengan contoh format seperti 192.168.0.1 (biasanya IP 192.168.0.1 ini digunakan untuk IP server). Perlu diketahui bahwa alamat IP sebuah komputer ini tidak boleh sama dengan alamat IP komputer yang lainnya. Yang membedakan hanya angka digit yang terakhir, misalkan kita tentukan alamat IP computer yang lainnya dengan 192.168.0.2, atau bisa juga 192.168.0.3 jika mempunyai banyak computer dalam satu jaringan.

Setelah itu, pada baris “Subnet mask” isikan dengan 255.255.255.0 (biasanya angka ini akan terisi otomatis ketika mengklik OK).

Pada baris “Default gateway” dikosongkan saja. Alamat ini biasanya diisikan pada computer client untuk mengakses internet dari computer server.

Jika sudah, lanjutkan dengan menekan OK kemudian akan kembali ke jendela Local Area Connection Properties dan sebelum menekan OK lagi, centangi (klik) pada “Show icon in notification area when connected”, hal ini bertujuan agar ketika koneksi sudah berjalan maka akan muncul icon (berupa gambar 2 buah kotak yang berhimpitan) pada kanan bawah.

5. Pengaturan alamat IP untuk satu komputer telah selesai.

Ulangi langkah-langkah tersebut untuk melakukan pengaturan alamat IP pada komputer yang satunya.

LANGKAH KETIGA, setelah melakukan pengaturan alamat IP berhasil, sekarang lakukan test koneksi kedua buah computer tersebut dengan cara ketik ping diikuti alamat IP dari satu computer ke computer yang lain dan kemudian lakukan sebaliknya.

Caranya,

Sebagai contoh, pada komputer dengan alamat IP 192.168.0.2 lakukan ping ke alamat IP komputer lain, misalnya ke 192.168.0.1 dengan cara >>>

Klik Start >> Run >> kemudian ketikkan ping 192.168.0.1 kemudian tekan OK atau ENTER (atau juga bisa lewat DOS Command) dan jika memang koneksi sukses, maka pada layar akan menampilkan pesan seperti di bawah ini.

Jika koneksi belum berhasil, maka pesannya adalah “Request timeout”, jika demikian coba restart kedua komputer tersebut atau lanjutkan pada tahap berikut ini.

LANGKAH KEEMPAT, melakukan konfigurasi dan pengaturan sebagai berikut.

Klik Start >> Control Panel >> Network Setup Wizard hingga akan muncul jendela Network Setup Wizard”, seperti di bawah ini.

Kemudian klik next hingga akan muncul jendela berikutnya, seperti di bawah ini.

Lanjutkan dengan menekan next lagi hingga akan muncul jendela berikutnya untuk memilih jenis atau metode koneksi, seperti di bawah ini.

Keterangan (kurang lebihnya demikian)

Opsi pertama, computer ini terhubung ke internet dan computer lainnya dalam jaringan ini akan terhubung ke internet melalui computer ini.

Opsi kedua, computer ini terhubung ke internet namun melalui computer lain dalam jaringan ini.

Opsi ketiga, metode lainnya.

Jika tidak ingin untuk koneksi internet, kita dapat memilih opsi “other” dan lanjutkan menekan next lagi hingga akan muncul jendela berikutnya, pilihan metode lainnya, seperti di bawah ini.

Keterangan (kurang lebih)

Opsi pertama, computer ini dan computer lainnya dalam jaringan tersebut terhubung ke internet melalui hub.

Opsi kedua, computer ini suatu saat akan kita hubungkan dengan internet namun tidak sekarang.

Opsi ketiga, computer ini hanya terhubung ke jaringan local yang tidak terhubung ke internet.

Sementara ini kita dapat memilih opsi ketiga “This computer belongs to a network that does not have an internet connection” kemudian lanjutkan dengan menekan next lagi hingga muncul jendela berikutnya, untuk menamai computer beserta deskripsinya, seperti di bawah ini.

Kemudian isikan deskripsi computer kita, misalnya “Ini Komputer ABC” atau dengan deskripsi yang lain pada baris “Computer description”.

Isikan juga nama computer kita sesuka kita, boleh menggunakan huruf maupun angka, maksimal 15 caracter, sebaiknya tidak menggunakan spasi, dalam contoh ini saya beri nama “ABC”.

Jika sudah, lanjutkan dengan menekan next lagi hingga muncul jendela berikutnya, menamai workgroup, seperti di bawah ini.

Kemudian namai workgroup sesuka kita yang penting untuk semua computer mempunyai workgroup yang sama, jika tidak ingin merubahnya lanjutkan dengan menekan next lagi hingga akan muncul jendela berikutnya, sharing file dan printer, seperti di bawah ini.

Salah satu tujuan menghubungkan dua buah computer (atau lebih) adalah untuk berbagi (share) file atau printer oleh karena itu, pilih opsi “Turn on file and printer sharing”. Namun jika tidak ingin men-share-nya, kita dapat mencentangi opsi “Turn off file and printer”.

Lanjutkan dengan menekan next lagi hingga muncul jendela yang memberitahukan nama dan deskripsi serta workgroup computer juga bahwa share file and printer adalah aktif, seperti di bawah ini.

Lanjutkan dengan menekan next lagi hingga muncul jendela yang memberitahukan bahwa system sedang melakukan konfigurasi jaringan, sebagai berikut.

Kemudian beberapa saat hingga muncul jendela yang memberitahukan bahwa konfigurasi jaringan telah dilakukan, seperti di bawah ini.

Pilih saja “Just finish the wizard, I don’t need to run the wizard on the computers” kemudian lanjutkan dengan menekan next lagi sehingga muncul jendela pemberitahuan bahwa wizard telah sukses, seperti di bawah ini.

Kemudian klik finish dan biasanya computer minta untuk direstart(memang harus direstart).

LANGKAH KELIMA, dengan demikian proses untuk mengkonfigurasi jaringan pada kedua computer kita telah selesai kemudian pastikan icon LAN yang berada di kanan bawah muncul dengan status “connected”, seperti icon di bawah ini.

Atau klik kiri pada icon tersebut maka kita akan mendapati jendelaLocal Area Connection Status, seperti di bawah ini.

LANGKAH KEENAM, Selesai.

Sampai dengan langkah ini, kita telah berhasil menghubungkan dua buah computer atau laptop.

Selanjutnya agar kedua computer dapat saling berbagi (share) file atau folder maka kita harus melakukan pengaturan (konfigurasi) terlebih dahulu, dan berikut ini langkah-langkahnya.

SHARING FILE, FOLDER, DAN DRIVE

Seperti yang kita tahu bahwa sebuah file dan file lainnya berada di dalam folder dan folder sendiri berada di dalam drive. Artinya bahwa jika kita telah men-sharing foldernya maka secara otomatis file-file yang berada di dalamnya juga ikut ter-sharing. Begitu juga dengan drive yang telah disharing maka folder-folder yang ada di dalamnya akan menjadi “berstatus shared” juga.

Dengan demikian, jika kita hanya menginginkan semua folder dalam suatu drive disharing maka kita langsung men-sharing drive-nya namun jika tidak, kita dapat men-setting sharing untuk folder-folder tertentu saja.

Berikut ini saya berikan contoh-contoh langkah-langkah untuk melakukan pengaturan sharing untuk drive tertentu pada salah satu computer, yaitu drive D.

Pertama, buka Windows Explorer (atau My Computer) kemudian klik kanan pada drive D kemudian pilih Sharing and Security,.. hingga muncul jendela seperti di bawah ini.

Kedua, kemudian klik “If you understand the risk but still want to share the root of the drive, click here” hingga akan muncul jendela seperti di bawah ini.

Ketiga, pada Network sharing and security, beri centang pada “Share this folder on the network”.

Kita dapat mengganti share name dengan teks yang lain. Share name ini yang akan terlihat oleh computer lain dalam satu jaringan tersebut.
Kita dapat juga mencentangi “Allow network users to change my files” agar kita yang bekerja pada computer yang satu dapat mengekplorasi file atau folder pada computer yang lain.

Jika sudah, lanjutkan dengan menekan OK atau Apply dan tunggu beberapa saat karena system yang sedang melakukan konfigurasi, seperti di bawah ini.

Jika prosesnya berhasil maka kita dapat melihat tanda “tangan mempersilakan” pada drive D yang telah kita setting menjadi “sharing”, seperti gambar di bawah ini.

Dan untuk mengetahui bahwa drive tersebut sudah “shared” kita dapat melihatnya pada “My Network Places” (pada Windows Explorer) dari kedua komputer, seperti di bawah ini.

Pada screenshot di atas, kita dapat melihat drive D yang terlihat bima (D) on Ini Komputer ABC (ABC). Bima adalah nama dari drive D, Ini Komputer ABC adalah deskripsi dari computer sedangkan (ABC) adalah nama computer.

Jika kita memberikan share nama “D” dan juga tidak memberikan deskripsi dari computer maka akan terlihat D on ABC, yang artinya drive D di computer ABC.

Di atas adalah contoh konfigurasi untuk men-sharing drive. Sedangkan untuk sharing folder mempunyai prosedur yang sama.

Keempat, selesai.

Sampai di sini, kita sudah dapat menghubungkan dua buah computer dan juga melakukan konfigurasi untuk sharing file, folder, atau drive.

Wi-Fi: dangerous to your PC's health

All Wi-Fi security is not equal. New attack methods could enable hackers to access older networks in just a few minutes.

Most people follow the mantra that if it ain't broke, you shouldn't fix it.

But when it comes to security matters, sticking with the WEP technology found in older Wi-Fi routers could prove costly. WEP encryption has been superseded by a stronger, harder-to-crack wireless security standard known as WPA. If your router offers the choice of WEP or WPA, the latter is the one to go for.

Nevertheless, a significant two-fifths of businesses – and an even higher percentage of home users – still use WEP. The problem here isn't simply that someone can piggyback your wireless network, using your bandwidth to get online to check their email or download hefty files at no cost to themselves. A vulnerable network with insufficient encryption can be hacked and valuable data leeched from it.

In the US, the biggest known data breach of 2006 enabled hackers to gain access to 94 million bank card numbers. Hackers were able to acquire these having hacked the wireless network of retailer TJX – a network secured using WEP.

But the latest proof-of-concept breach demonstrates even more clearly why it's time to trade in WEP for stronger WPA encryption – or the updated version, WPA2.

Security researcher Vivek Ramachandran has developed what's known as the Caffè Latte technique – so-called because the hack enables the attacker to break through WEP protection on a client machine such as a laptop in the time it takes the unsuspecting owner to drink a cup of coffee.

In the past, hackers have focused on using WEP flaws to break into wireless networks. This process involves driving to a hotspot and cracking the WEP key to gain direct access to the network. Ramachandran's technique instead targets attached devices, tricking the WEP-enabled client into thinking that it's logging on to a familiar network.

The technique could give crooks the keys to any wireless network to which the laptop or device had access, including that of a hacked laptop owner's company.

"With the discovery of our attack, every employee of an organisation is the target of an attack," says Ramachandran.

To ensure you're safeguarded from such vulnerabilities, upgrade your Wi-Fi security – there may be an option to update the firmware for your router to WPA at the maker's website. If not, ensure the WEP encryption it uses is the lengthiest 128bit string variety – the longer the string, the longer the sequence will take to crack.

WEP and WPA can't co-exist on a network, so ensure you upgrade all your wireless devices to at least WPA. Both this and WPA2 use dynamically updating encryption keys, which makes it far harder for hackers to crack them. Some routers support both WPA and WPA2, so you'll be able to mix and match WPA router security if not all support the latter version.

The simple step of changing the default network name and password from the one the manufacturer set as the default can also help deter casual Wi-Fi piggybackers and lazy hackers.

Encrypting outgoing mail messages and other sensitive data is another good idea. Use a product such as Steganos Safe One to do so. This way, should someone find their way on to your Wi-Fi connection, they won't simply be able to intercept whatever's passing through it and have a good peek.

A Firefox Auto-Reload

Do you ever watch an item on auction sites, such as WorldStart or Ebay, and wait until it gets down to only minutes left to decide if you want to bid or not? Or how about any Web site in which you tend to hit the Refresh button every couple of minutes so you can see the updated page? After awhile, on auction sites especially, when it gets down to the bid time, it doesn't always refresh all the information you need. Fortunately, Firefox has some great add ons that can help you keep pages fresh and up to date.

One add on, Tab Mix Plus (TMP), is one that enhances the tabbed browsing feature of Firefox. It allows you to undo tabs you may have accidentally closed and it also has a session manager, which can restore Firefox back to a previous state if it ever closes unexpectedly. It also has features I couldn’t live without, namely auto-reload.

Once you've download TMP, make your way to the Options menu, click on the Menu icon at the top and then click on the Main Context Menu tab, as shown below. These options can all be added or removed from the context menu, which comes up when you right click anywhere in the white space of the page. Do not right click over an image, as a different menu will pop up. Make sure the option of “Reload Every” is checked and then click OK.

You will now be able to right click and set the auto-reload rate. Next, click anywhere in the white space of the page and the menu shown below should appear. Notice that now, you should have “Reload Every” as a pull out menu. Move your mouse over it and the menu will be shown. There are some predefined amounts of time already set, which makes it easy to use. First, you’ll want to make sure that Enable is checked (a). Then you can choose the amount of time between reloads. If you want all the tabs in Firefox to reload at that rate, simply click on Enable All Tabs (c). That way, you don’t have to set every tab’s rate.

If you would like to set your own reload rate, simply click on Custom (b) and the menu shown below will appear. This helps if you want to have some tabs reloading an odd number of seconds, as all the presets are multiples of five.

TMP contains many different features that, when played with, allow you to customize Firefox to your liking. If you are only looking for a certain feature, you can always search the Mozilla Firefox add on site for what you want. Have fun!

Installing an "Old" Printer in Vista

I have a couple of questions for you today! Have you ever tried connecting your old printer to your new Windows Vista computer? Ever had to face a "PCL6 Driver Not Compatible" error message in Vista? If so, read on, because I have some good news for you!

When installing your still functional legacy printer (like the NEC SuperScript 1450, for example) onto your new computer system with Windows Vista, immediately, you'll be struck with an incompatibility issue. An error message like this will probably pop up on your screen: “PCL6 driver was not compatible with a policy enabled on your computer.” After getting that error message, you're basically unable to use your old printer. But, like I said before, there's a quick relief. Here's what you can do:

The error message clearly says there's a problem with the policy. Hence, when the same policy is changed, you'll be able to get your printer up and running. All you have to do is this:

Go to Start.
Type in “gpedit.msc” (without the quotes) and then hit Enter. That will launch the Group Policy Object Editor.
Under the Computer Configuration section, double click on Administrative Templates and then select Printers.
In the right pane, find the policy named "Disallow Installation of Printers Using Kernel-mode Drivers" and double click on it.
Set its status to Disabled.

Have you ever wondered what all your computer has in terms of hardware? I'm talking about everything from the motherboard to ports to controllers to drives and every other resource your computer uses to help you get your work done. Well, if you have ever wished that you could have a compiled list of this information, today is your lucky day. That's exactly what I'm going to show you!

It's very easy to print out a list of your hardware right through your computer's Device Manager (which is the utility that holds all of the information about the devices, etc. on your computer). To open the Device Manager, right click on the My Computer icon on your desktop and choose Properties. From there, click on the Hardware tab and then hit the Device Manager button. You will then see a list of all the services on your system. Now, you must click on one of the items so it is highlighted. Then go up to the Action menu and hit Print.

When the print job is done, you will probably have at least two pages, if not more, worth of listings for your computer's hardware information. Depending on your computer, you will probably have a list of your hardware, then a memory summary, a port summary, a system summary and a disk drive summary. Once you're done looking over everything, make sure you keep it in case you ever want to refer back to it. You also might want to do a print out of this every so often, just so you will have an updated list. Neato!

Recently a special show on NDTV attracted my mind.The topic was about Internet Addiction.Wikipedia defines Internet Addiction as

A pattern of internet use, leading to clinically significant impairment or distress as manifested by three of the following occurring at any time in the same 12-month period: -1- tolerance, -2- withdrawal, -3- internet is often accessed more often or longer than intended, -4- there is a persistent desire or unsuccessful effort to cut down or control internet use, -5- a great deal of time is spent in activities related to Internet use, -6- Frequent talks about the Internet in daily life, -7- important family, social, occupational, or recreational activities are given up or reduced (3).

Some people are addicted to IM services, some others are addicted to social networking sites like orkut & mypsace.Some love sharing emails while some can't live without Youtube videos.Some run after Internet Gaming.And many of them love blogging & reading blogs.

Blogging till a hobby is alright.When you'll be involved in blogging, you'll automatically have some dreams about posts & what would be new tomorrow.Such people {leaving full time bloggers} can't even live a day without it.It has become their habit to surf for long hours on the net. Reasons, they ignore environment, your health & families.You can take yourself's a test of blogging addiction by answering to some simple questions.The results may be scary.

How to get rid of this Addiction ?

From my experience,I believe taking a holiday without laptops or mobiles and enjoying the outside world is a must for such people.Spending time with your families can also reduce your stress.

But My Blog Traffic, Feed Count will go down.

I don't say that you permanently go to long vacation (until you desperately require one).Leave a minimum gap of one day between your pervious blog update & the next one.

What I can say,is that if your content is original & interesting, nobody would un subscribe your feed.By changing your posting frequency, you will give appropriate time for your posts to be on the homepage which may be useful for SE indexing, and also may be visitor magnets.

If you are really addicted to internet, one day will come when you'll have one friend & one family, your PC.

How to install your template
Step 1.Click on Template title (For eg. "Minima White")

Step 2.Goto Edit template section of your layout tab

Step 3. Upload it from the place where you saved it.

Important: Widgets
By installing any one of these templates, there are chances that all your widgets are lost(means all your customization is lost and only default template would be their).

Header Image
It's been observed that the template isn't permitting images.the temporary solution is that you delete the 'Header' page element.Then re-add it using 'Add a Gadget' link in the layout section.

XML Errors
Instead of copy-pasting the code,try downloading it and then uploading.For downloading Right click on the template link you wish to download and select "Save Target As" in IE or "Save Link As" in Firefox.Then upload it from Edit HTML section of the Layout Tab.
